Pond figures leave 1 ft of liner outside each opposing edge. Treat them as the ceiling rather than the target, because an anchor trench, thick coping, a bog area or a waterfall return each take more membrane than the minimum allowance.

Sheets 5 ft wide carry no pond figure for a reason. Two 2 ft walls plus the edge allowance already exceed the width, which is why that size lives on streambeds, cascades and patch work instead. PondGard is manufactured in more widths and lengths than the sheets above, running to full rolls of 100 ft through distributors, so availability moves around by seller.

Work Out Your Liner Size

Rectangular and oval ponds

Two sums settle it. Measure the longest point, the widest point and the deepest point of the finished excavation, then feed those numbers into the formula.

  • Length = pond length + (2 x depth) + 2 ft
  • Width = pond width + (2 x depth) + 2 ft
  • The spare 2 ft leaves 1 ft outside each edge
  • Round up to the next sheet, never down

Kidney and freeform shapes

A rectangular sheet still covers a curved pond. Take the longest overall length and the widest overall width, then size the liner as though the pond were the box that contains it.

  • Never average a width because one end narrows
  • Surplus rubber folds against itself and hides
  • A planting shelf does not shorten the wall
  • A rope laid in the hole beats a drawing

Streams and waterfalls

Width is where stream liners fail. Water leaves sideways long before it finds a hole in the bottom, so the membrane has to sit well above the flowing surface on both banks.

  • Measure the channel profile, not the water
  • Carry the liner up and over both banks
  • Overlap at each drop, upper sheet on top
  • Double the underlayment beneath boulders

Worked example: a 15 ft x 20 ft sheet

Take a pond 12 ft long, 7 ft wide and 3 ft deep at its deepest point. Each direction pays for two walls before anything is left over.

Once the hole exists, a non-stretch rope measures it better than any drawing. Run it from a foot outside one edge, down the real wall profile, across every shelf and the deepest part of the bottom, then back up and a foot past the opposite side. Repeat in the other direction.

A liner several feet too large folds and trims. A liner that stops 6 inches below the finished edge cannot be stretched into a sound perimeter, and there is no second attempt once the pond is full of water and stone.

What 45 Mil EPDM Changes

The hole decides the shape

A rigid shell forces the excavation to match a molded outline. EPDM works the other way around. Dig the shelves, curves and deep zone you actually want, then lay rubber that stretches past 300 percent into whatever you made. Surplus material gathers into folds and disappears under the edge stone.

Formulated to sit against fish

PondGard does not release harmful chemicals into the water around it and is not hazardous to aquatic fauna. That is the line between a pond liner and a roofing sheet made from the same polymer. Everything after that comes down to filtration, stocking density and what goes into the water later.

Firestone PondGard is now Elevate PondGard

Firestone Building Products joined Holcim, announced the Elevate name in June 2022 and retired Firestone branding across roofing, wall and lining products by April 2024. Materials, formulations, plants and quality programs carried straight over. Older stock still carries the Firestone label.

Built to be forgotten

PondGard holds its mechanical properties through UV, oxidation, heat and frost, and it stays flexible down to roughly minus 49 F. Installations past their fortieth year are still holding water. A liner buried under water, rock and finished planting has to be the part of the build nobody revisits.

Water escapes a stream sideways far more often than it escapes through the bottom.

A masonry basin can look flat from a few feet away and still hold an edge sharp enough to cut rubber under load.

  • Keep petroleum products, mineral and vegetable oils, grease and animal fats away from the membrane during storage, installation and service. EPDM survives four decades of weather and can still be ruined by a spill from a pump or a piece of landscaping equipment parked on it.
  • Roofing EPDM is not an equivalent substitute. PondGard is manufactured and specified as a lining membrane for water containment, and roofing sheets use different formulations, surface treatments and approvals. For a pond holding fish, buy the membrane made for the job.
  • Underlayment goes down first, every time. Geotextile spreads the load of the stone you missed and gives the rubber something to rest on other than bare soil. It does not excuse leaving roots and sharp rock in the hole.
  • Folds are correct, not a defect. A flat rectangle pushed into a curved excavation has to put its surplus somewhere. Fold it against itself into large organized pleats rather than leaving dozens of small wrinkles for debris to collect in.

Elongation is the number that decides how installation goes. Rubber stretching past 300 percent settles into a shelf or a tight corner instead of bridging over it, and it keeps absorbing ground movement for years afterward. None of that defeats a sharp rock left under the sheet.

Watch what depth does to those three rows. Every extra foot costs 2 ft of membrane in both directions. The same 300 sq ft sheet yields 126 sq ft of water surface at 2 ft deep. At 4 ft it yields 50. Decide the depth before you shop for a size.

  • Sheets join with a 4 inch minimum overlap, QuickPrime on both mating surfaces, QuickSeam splice tape and a pressure roller over the finished splice. Household tape and general construction adhesive will not bond EPDM. Nothing gets seamed in rain, condensation or standing water.
  • A puncture gets patched, not replaced. Expose and clean the membrane well beyond the damage, dry it, prime it, then set an EPDM patch that extends generously past the hole. Finding the leak normally takes longer than fixing it.
  • Before draining a pond, rule out the leaks that are not the liner: splash escaping at the waterfall, a low spot in the perimeter, plumbing under the filter, water wicking out through gravel laid over the edge, and ordinary evaporation during a hot week.

If you’re building a pond this is the liner you want! It’s thick and durable. I built my pond on a budget, but this was one of the items I didn’t cheap out on. If you buy a cheap liner and end up with a tear or hole you’re going to have to breakdown entire pond and start with a new liner. Spend the little bit of extra money now and do it right the first time. I did a lot of research when building my pond and I’m so happy I went with a quality liner. You won’t be disappointed in this product.

Amazing product. The pond is a year old and hasn't leaked! My recommendation is watch a lot of YouTube videos before trying to install a pond. It helps if you do several levels in the long can use big enough folders that you cover the edges so that you can completely hide the liner which is exactly what we did. Another suggestion or almost requirement is that you put a felt underlayment below the rubber liner and then our case we had sharp boulders so we put another felt liner on top of the rubber liner before we hit it behind the rocks and boulders. Ponds are a big commitment so do it right!

If you are looking for a thick durable pond liner and a company with great customer service then look no further! Bought my liner and it leaked out 2000gal in 3 days. I got in touch with there customer service and they had me 2 patch kits within 2days! This thing is super durable and I'm pretty sure will hold up to whatever you put on it. I bought this to use as a liner for a homemade pool. I built a pool that was 8ft wide 12ft long and 4ft tall. This liner is working perfect after the first night of having it filled. Water level isn't down at all and I couldn't be happier!! We built this mostly for our 2 large dogs (Newfoundland, Great Dane) to be able to swim at home and to be able to swim with them. Haven't tried putting them in yet but pretty sure this will hold up to there nails easily because this thing is thick! Very happy with our purchase and there customer service.

We built up and out on an existing pond, as we were having to add a new liner anyway (no injuries to the deer or fish, old liner damaged badly). This liner is big, it is heavy, due to the weather we were not able to lay it in the sun for a few hours to make it easier to work with. We were a few hours between storms on the install. It took 4 people, one at each corner to pick it up and put it in place. Once we got the center of the liner to the center of the pond, the liner fell in place, making it very easy to work with, smoothing it out was really all that was required. Then putting the blocks (that will get a stucco treatment later) on to hold it in place. It took about an hour to get the liner situated "just right", some blocks on it, water back in the pond, and the fish back in their home. Those fish are some happy fellows, they are loving the new liner and the extra space.

I got a cheaper liner earlier this year and it was such a mistake. This one came onto the market at a good price and I bought it. They say it is heavy, but it is actually relatively easy to drag into place once unrolled. I installed it and filled it with water and for the first time the water level in my small pond has remained the same. I am completely pleased.

From Delivery to Filled Pond

    Clear the excavation before anything goes into it

    Pull out roots and sharp stone, fill voids wider than about a quarter inch, and smooth the walls. Get oil, grease and loose debris off the surface. Thousands of pounds of water will press the membrane onto every point you leave behind, and a sharp rock under 45 mil rubber is still a sharp rock.

    Put geotextile underlayment down

    Underlayment cushions the rubber against the ground and takes the hit from whatever the excavation still hides. It earns its money over rocky soil, over concrete and beneath heavy stonework. On boulder-heavy builds a second layer above the liner protects it from the stone going in on top.

    Carry the liner in rather than dragging it

    Set the folded sheet next to the hole, open it out over the underlayment and work it into position without pulling it tight. Warm sun for an hour first makes the rubber noticeably easier to handle. Dragging an 85 lb sheet across gravel collects damage nobody finds until the pond is full.

    Let the rubber relax before committing to anything

    Panels want 30 to 45 minutes to lie down naturally before they get seamed or fastened. The same principle holds for a one-piece backyard liner. Let it settle into the hole under its own weight instead of forcing every fold into its final position while the pond is still empty.

    Fill slowly, then trim last

    Rising water pushes the membrane into the shelves and corners for you. Adjust the pleats as the level climbs, paying attention at curves and shelf edges. Cut the perimeter only once the liner has taken its final position, and leave enough above the waterline to build a proper edge.

Hide the finished edge above the normal water level and grade the surrounding soil away from the pond. Rain running toward a pond carries lawn dirt and whatever you last spread on the grass straight into the water.

Once the liner is buried it asks for almost nothing. Ongoing pond work means pumps, filters, plants and leaf litter, not the rubber underneath. Draining a mature pond to scrub the membrane back to a new-looking black does more harm than the algae was doing.

When the pond is down for other reasons, protect what is exposed. No walking across it with grit caught in your boot treads, no tools dropped on it, no pressure washer held close.

If edging shifts over a season, fix the cause rather than the symptom. A slipped rock turns into a pressure point, and an exposed perimeter turns into something a string trimmer can find.
